Waterproof Deck Coating Options
There are many options for waterproofing your deck, and each has its pros and cons. For every type of decking option, there’s an ideal waterproofing method. Adding waterproofing treatment during a restoration project will help improve your deck’s longevity.
Armor Coatings will work with you to provide the best service regarding waterproofing your above grade decks, including wood-based and concrete decks. We use techniques that work with previous deck restoration systems, recoating systems, and under-tile systems.
Polycoat Deck Waterproofing Restoration System
Polycoat Deck Waterproofing Restoration System is another specialty that our experts continue to stay current with their training. This restoration system is known for reliability and is used for every kind of balcony, walkway, or high traffic deck area. This system is commonly used to restore and waterproof pedestrian spaces, such as stadiums.
This option is a liquid applied to your current deck, providing a barrier against the elements. It’s an epoxy type polyurethane technique, using layers of different types to offer flexibility to expand and contract with varying patterns of weather and natural structure movements.
The Polycoat option meets high criteria and expectations, passing the restrictions on VOCs and building codes with ease. Because of its elastomeric properties, it is suitable for all climates. This option creates a seamless and chemical resistant surface, protecting your outdoor space from spills, chips, and gouge.
StreetBond Pavement Coating
Another option offered by Armor Coatings is StreetBond pavement coatings. StreetBond comes in bright colors and sun-reflective options. These are frequently used in tennis courts, outdoor basketball courts, and other high traffic outdoor surfaces. For a skid-proof finish to your high traffic area, StreetBond is a fantastic option. Ideal uses for this option are pool decks, athletic courts, and other spaces where concrete will be exposed to water or harsh weather
For remodels or new construction, adding an under-tile waterproofing system is forward-thinking. An excellent investment for the long life of your tile deck. By adding a waterproofing layer before laying your tile, it will save time and money in the future.
This technique involves applying multiple layers of an elastomeric epoxy basecoat to the existing plywood or metal-to-deck seams. Top the last coat in deck grade mesh sand before letting it cure to give a firm texture to attach the tile to. Once it has cured, you can follow instructions for laying your chosen tiles or pavers.
Signs of Water Damage
It’s best if you don’t wait for signs of water damage before applying a waterproof deck coating. Waiting too long will require you to restore the deck surface before treating it with a waterproofing option.
Water damage is more than just unsightly. Water damage in your deck can lead to rot and breakage. When a deck rots out, it can damage the foundation of your home, and provide an opening for pests to infiltrate the structure of your home. Wood rot attracts bugs and rodents and can create a fall hazard.
If signs of damage are the reason for your restoration, you will want to watch for warping of boards, and chipping of paint or wood on wood-based decks. You’ll want to watch for cracks and crumbling in concrete based decks. Coastal towns and wet environments see more water damage than dryer climates, but even hot places can experience major rainy seasons.
The best option is to treat your deck with a waterproofing system long before any damage occurs and keep it well maintained. This will reduce the costs later down the road.
